Panels A–D and G,H show transverse sections through the hindbrain of embryos at the level of rhombomere 5, panels E,F,I,J show dorsal views of (E,I) wild-type and (F,J) hdac1 mutant hindbrain, demonstrating that early expression of olig2 in r5/r6 and later expression throughout the ventral medial hindbrain is strictly hdac1-dependent.
