Multiple Nodal receptor candidates are expressed during early zebrafish development.

(A) In the classical model, Nodal signaling requires the recruitment of a receptor complex comprising the co-receptor Oep (Tdgf1 homolog) as well as Type I and Type II Activin receptors (Acvr) to induce phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of the signal transducer pSmad2/3 for the induction of Nodal target genes. (B) Phylogenetic neighbor-joining alignment tree of Type I and Type II receptor protein sequences from human, mouse, and zebrafish. Bootstrap values are listed at the nodes and indicate evolutionary distances. (C) Temporal expression analysis of putative Nodal receptors at different developmental stages.
