Co-misexpression of atoh1a with fgf8 or sox2. Embryos were fixed and processed at the indicated times. Arrowheads mark positions of endogenous and ectopic sensory epithelia. Images in I–L show transverse sections with dorsal to the top. The boxed areas in I and K are enlarged in J and L, respectively. The hindbrain shows sporadic formation of microvesicles (asterisks), suggesting tissue disruption, and the adjacent wall of the otic vesicle shows marked epithelial thinning (et). All other images show dorsolateral views, with anterior to the left and dorsal to the top.
