(Scale bar, 20 µm.) (B) Cell types present within the caudal fin of a 3-dpf zebrafish larva using transmission electron microscopy. The caudal fin consists of three skin layers: the outer periderm (P, also known as enveloping layer, yellow), the inner basal cell layer (B, marked in green), and the mesenchymal cell layer (M) with actinotrichia (A). RB sensory axons are located between basal cells and periderm (not visible in this image).
