Acute light induction develops within the first day of development in Pachón cavefish. Surface and Pachón embryos were kept in constant darkness until a 3-h light pulse was given beginning at (a-d) 5 hpf and (f-i) 23 hpf. Expression of per2b mRNA was analysed by in situ hybridisation in light-pulsed and dark control samples, with the same detection time for all treatments. (e and j) per2b sense control for embryos at 8 hpf and 26 hpf respectively. Black arrow indicates the position of the pineal gland. Scale bar, 0.4 mm.
