Layer 5 of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex lying deep to the internal granule cell layer 4 and cytoarchitectonically divisible into layers 5a and 5b. Layer 5a is characterized by the predominance of large pyramidal cell bodies. Layer 5b is pale in comparison.
