An essential oil consisting of approximately one hundred hydrocarbon and terpenoid components obtained by steam distillation from the leaves and terminal branchlets of the tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia; the yield of oil is typically 1-2% of wet plant material weight. The main components are 4-terpineol (40%), gamma-terpinene (23%), alpha-terpinene (10%), 1,8-cineole (5%), terpinolene (3%), and p-cymene (3%).
