Research area of interest :

1.Gamete quality in teleost
The quality of eggs and sperm may be affected by chemical physical factors (meteorological and oceanographical parameters like Temperature, pH, Salinity, O2, CO2 etc.. ) as well as by anthropic factors as describe below. The global changes in marine species may have dramatic effects on the viability of gametes with detrimental effects on fecundity and fish biomass of the most economic relevant specimens, as well as on biodiversity. By molecular, cellular and morphological tools can be evaluated the quality of gametes. These results may be used as early warning signal to avoid the collapse of the Ichthyic resources and for a better management of natural resources.
Key words: Gametes quality, eggs, sperm, fecundity, biodiversity, fish biomass

2.Reproductive endocrinology and physiology of new species for aquaculture
New species including tropical fish reproduction for aquarium trade and for restocking of endangered species in natural habitat
Key words: Aquaculture, new species in aquaculture, fish restocking

3.Development of new diet for environment-friendly aquaculture. Natural products with immuno-modulator activity, probiotics, prebiotics, properties will be identified by biological tests to develop new commercial feed additives and to optimize the administration protocols to improve animal welfare ( improvement of stress tolerance, growth food intake and health status), animal growth and the waste water quality. improvement
Key words: Feed additives, organic aquaculture, fish diet, immuno-modulator, Probiotics, fish welfare, food intake , growth improvement, waste water improvement, friendly aquaculture

4.Animal welfare monitoring. Health status and animal welfare of farmed aquatic organisms may be affected by captive stressful conditions such as crowding, confinement, environmental conditions, pathogens, improper diet etc...Animals under unfavourable conditions show typical symptoms of stress like a lower growth rate and a reduction of the immuno-system responsiveness that may lead the animal to a higher susceptibility to pathogens daises and higher mortality. By molecular approach, the welfare of farmed animals may be monitored using validate biomarkers.
Key words: Fish stress, fish wellness, growth metabolism, animal welfare biomarkers

5.Reproductive toxicology to monitor the environmental risk. One of the goals is the development of biomarkers to determine how contaminants alter the health of wildlife populations. To evaluate if remedial action (i.e. removal and/or treatment of dredged materials) reduces toxic effects of the exposure to mixtures of contaminants (i.e. water column, dredged materials), a wide spectrum of aspects as reproduction, endocrinological axis, immune system and genotoxic aspects, on different marine fish models (Sparus aurata, Solea solea, Fundulus heteroclitus, Danio rerio) by genomic and proteomic approach.
Key words: Endocrine disrupters, biomarkers, environmental contaminants, sentinel species, biomagnification, bioconcentration, environmental risk assessment

6.Appetite Control. The role of endocannabinoid system in the control of food intake in teleost is one of the newest research area of this laboratory. The central and peripheral control of appetite is studied at brain, liver and gut level by a wide spectrum of molecules involved in the food intake control by physiological, genomic, and proteomic approach
Key words: appetite, cannabinoid system, food intake, Neuropeptide Y, leptin, GHrelin, CB1
