A proposed model for myocardial-derived BMP signaling during the initiation of nfatc1 transcription and endocardial differentiation.

Myocardium secretes BMP homologs which induce transcription of nfatc1 and other target genes in the adjacent vascular endothelium at 22-24 hpf, thus establishing endocardial identity of these cells. Continued myocardial signaling is required for the maintenance of endocardial identity at 36 hpf and later stages.
