Prieto and Zolessi (2017) suggest that the "a" and "b" designations, established in 2012, of the marcksl1 paralogs, should be reversed based on structural and functional similarities to the MARCKSL1 genes. No changes were made because the "a" and "b" designations are not reflective of priority in discovery, function or structure but are designated based on the evidence available at the time of the nomenclature event for the evolutionary and syntenic relationship to the ancestral gene.
